Different Types Of RV Batteries 6v And 12v

Some people struggle with the choice between 12 and 6 volt RV batteries. In the previous RV article we talked a little bit about RV batteries. Today we’re going to focus on 6 volt RV batteries and 12 volt RV batteries.Find out what their strengths and weaknesses are. First of all, we will discuss two kinds of connections about batteries: series and parallel.

What are series and parallel connections?

Series connections Series connections

Involve connecting 2 or more batteries together, the amp-hour rating is not change, but the voltage of the battery system is increased. To keep in mind, each battery needs to have the same voltage and capacity rating in series connections. Otherwise you can end up damaging the battery. To connect batteries in series, for achieving the desire voltage you want, you connect the positive terminal of one battery to the negative of another until achieved your target voltage. You need to utilize a charger that matches the system voltage, when charging batteries in series. For this to avoid imbalance between batteries,we recommend you charge each battery individually, with a multi-bank charger.

Parallel connectionsParallel connections

Involve connecting 2 or more batteries together, the voltage of batteries stay the same, but the amp-hour capacity of the battery bank is increased. To connect batteries in parallel, for your desired capacity of the batteries, you can connect the positive terminals together via a cable, and connect the negative terminals together with another cable until you reach your desired capacity.

A parallel connection is increase the duration for it could power equipment, and is not meant to allow your batteries to power anything above its standard voltage output. It’s important to note that the increased amp-hour capacity may require a longer charge time, when charging batteries that are connected in parallel.

RV battery set up

The 6V RV Battery Set-Up

Normally RVs run on 12V power. So how can we run a 12V RV with a 6V battery? There are two ways to wire batteries together, series and parallel as we mentiond above. When we wire in parallel like we do with 12V RV batteries we are basically making a larger battery but the voltage stays the same. So here for the 6v battery, we need two batteries in series to get 12v.There’s no way around it.

Advantages of Using 6V Batteries

  • Slower discharge rate: A higher amp capacity makes the battery to have lower discharge rate and heat dissipation.
  • Less charge memory:These batteries are also less prone to charge memory.
  • Last much longer: The construction style of 6-Volt battery, which allows it to drain and frequently recharge without negatively affecting the battery life .

Disadvantages

  • Expensive: You’d better get 12V batteries if you are on a tight budget.
  • Size: 6V batteries may require you to install different battery boxes, because they are much taller .
  • Hard to find: Usually only find them in specialty stores or large automotive supply stores, cause there are not that many brands of 6V batteries.

The 12v RV Battery Set-Up

This is the most common configuration used in RVs. With 12V batteries in parallel, we will only need 2 small jumper cables, positive to positive, negative to negative, and the main RV wires attached to each end to create this configuration.

Advantages of 12v Batteries in Parallel:

  • Larger capacity: When we connect batteries in perallel,we are getting twice the charge capacity. We can use smaller appliances, like radios, televisions, and the like much longer than when we connect them in series.
  • cheaper : 6V batteries are more expensive than 12V batteries. This is one of the reasons why more RVers use 12V batteries.
  • Easy to get: We can find them in all auto supply stores. So it is easy to find replacements even in small towns.

Disadvantages

  • Weight: One 200ah 12V AGM deep cycle RV battery can weight as much as 114 lbs. But lithium iron phosphate battery is much lighter just 55 lbs.
  • Durability: It is slightly less durable than a 6V battery, but a high quality 12v lithium iron phosphate battery can be just as durable.
  • Storage: To fit larger 12V high amp hour batteries, you may need larger storage area.

Battery voltage has no effect on battery life, so choosing two 6-volt batteries over one or even a pair of 12-volt batteries has no benefit. And 12-volt batteries are more convenient. It will annoying us when we have to shop around for a replacement 6V battery in emergency ,which may ruin our vocation.
