What high C-rate means

C-rate expresses charge or discharge current as a multiple of capacity. For a 20 Ah cell, 1C is 20 A, so a 5C cell can deliver 100 A and a 40C cell can deliver 800 A — the kind of current a starter motor demands. That is why a 20 Ah LiFePO4 battery can crank an engine that a 20 Ah lead-acid battery never could: the amp-hour rating is similar, but the rate capability is in a different league.

TermMeaning
C-rateCurrent as a multiple of capacity (1C = capacity × 1)
CCA (cold cranking amps)Current deliverable for 30 s at −18 °C without falling below 7.2 V
Continuous dischargeSustained current the pack can supply, e.g. 100 A
Pulse dischargeShort bursts, e.g. 800 A for starting

The lower weight and the flat voltage curve are what make a lithium starter battery attractive in race and performance vehicles — the same properties that make a 12 V pack from 3.2 V cells so effective.

Applications

  • Race and track bikes — weight saving and reliable cranking, up to 1,200 cc and beyond.
  • Competition ATVs and supermotos — high pulse current for repeated starts.
  • Passenger vehicles up to 3.0 L — a direct replacement for a 12 V 60 Ah lead-acid battery.
  • Track cars and classic vehicles — where the battery sits for long periods and self-discharge matters.

Charging a 12V 20Ah LiFePO4 battery

  • Charge voltage — 14.6 V full charge on a 4S pack (3.65 V per cell).
  • Charge current — 0.2C to 1C, so 4 A to 20 A for a 20 Ah pack.
  • Profile — set the charger or alternator regulator to LiFePO4; a lead-acid equalisation stage must be disabled.
  • Cold — do not charge below 0 °C; the BMS will inhibit it on a protected pack.

The protection that keeps the pack inside these limits is the BMS; a covered example is our 51.2 V 150 Ah deep-cycle battery.

12V lithium starter battery FAQs

Can a lithium battery start a car?

Yes. A high C-rate LiFePO4 pack delivers the pulse current a starter needs — often 600–800 A — from a small, light package.

Does a 12V 20Ah lithium battery replace a 12V 60Ah lead-acid?

For starting duty, yes. The cranking current comes from the rate capability rather than the amp-hour rating, so a smaller lithium pack starts engines a larger lead-acid unit would struggle with.

What is CCA on a lithium battery?

Cold cranking amps — the current the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at −18 °C while staying above 7.2 V. Well-built LiFePO4 starter batteries are rated in the hundreds of amps.
