How to size a battery for your rounds

Work from the energy a round consumes, not from the cart’s label. A golf cart typically uses about 0.6–1.0 kWh per 18-hole round depending on terrain and payload, so:

  • One round a day, flat course — a 5 kWh pack is ample and leaves margin.
  • Two rounds, or hilly terrain — 7–10 kWh.
  • Commercial fleet, multiple rounds — 10 kWh and above, or swappable packs.

Because lithium can be discharged deeply, a 5 kWh LiFePO4 pack gives about as much usable energy as a much heavier lead-acid bank.

Charging and day-to-day care

  • Use a lithium-profile charger at the correct voltage; a lead-acid charger will undercharge or overcharge the pack.
  • Opportunity charging is fine for LiFePO4 — partial charges do not shorten its life the way they do for lead-acid.
  • Store the cart at around 50 % charge if it will stand for weeks.
  • Avoid charging below 0 °C; most packs inhibit charging themselves through the BMS.
  • Keep the terminals clean and check the BMS for cell imbalance periodically.
